In 1930, at the Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov, while – the second Moscow Medical Institute, pediatric faculty was opened. It is one of the first faculties in the country. And although now in Russia, pediatricians are trained in 38 faculties, the pediatric faculty of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov is the leading one. The worthy successors of the great pediatrician teachers work here – wonderful people, world-famous scientists, excellent doctors and brilliant organizers.

Among them are academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Yu.F. Isakov, N.I. Nisevich, N.S. Kislyak, G.M. Savelyeva, O.V. Volkova, V.F. Uchaykin, E.A. Stepanov, V.A. Mikhelson, Yu.G. Pivovarov, Yu.P. Lisitsin, M.R. Bogomilsky, E.I. Sidorenko; Professor Yu.G.Mukhina, G.A. Samsygina, V.F. Demin, B.N. Budlaev, N.P.Katlukov, I.M. Osmanov, A.A. Terentyev, V.A. Filin and many others.

Since the health potential of a country’s population is formed from childhood, then, as N. A. Semashko, the first people’s commissar for health, wrote back in 1923, “the health of the population must begin with the health of the mother and child.” This, of course, makes it necessary to train doctors who are highly professional and competent in pediatrics – the science of childhood diseases, their diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

How is the study at the faculty built?

In general, pediatric students study medicine, various aspects of it for 6 years (full time) and 7 years (evening) at 54 departments of the university. Moreover, training is conducted not only at specialized, purely pediatric departments (propaedeutic of children’s diseases, faculty of pediatrics, hospital pediatrics, children’s infectious diseases, children’s surgical diseases, etc.), but also at the departments where they study the issues of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of certain diseases among adults, since a child at 14-15 years old is already a practically formed organism of an adult person. This approach to teaching is all the more relevant because at the VIII congress of pediatricians of Russia, held in February 1998, it was decided to provide medical care in a children’s clinic not only to children, but also to adolescents under the age of 17 years (inclusive), who currently observed in adolescent outpatient clinics.

In addition to clinical training, pediatricians study fundamental natural science, biomedical and medical preventive disciplines, which allows to prepare highly qualified specialists who have the opportunity, after receiving a diploma of a pediatrician, to work on any medical specialty, which now numbers more than 100.

In addition to theoretical training, students must undergo practical training, in the process of passing which future pediatricians learn practical skills at the patient’s bed in various medical institutions. In accordance with the curriculum, students undergo practical training as an assistant: after the first course – junior medical staff, after the second course – a ward nurse, after the third course – a procedural nurse, after the fourth course – a hospital doctor (surgery, therapy, obstetrics and gynecology ), after the V course – a doctor of outpatient clinics.

What is fundamentally different from other pediatric faculties of Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov?

The main difference is that in all departments, students, along with the general issues of medicine, studying diagnosis and treatment in connection with the anatomical and physiological processes occurring in the human body, master the knowledge of the peculiarities of the physiological and pathological processes, the manifestations of the disease and the treatment tactics in depending on the age and sex characteristics of children. Special attention in the departments of the faculty is paid to the issues of prevention and education of a healthy child

Many applicants are interested in the question:

Does the knowledge gained in the school enough for admission to Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov?

I am sure that it is quite sufficient to master the school curriculum in order to withstand the competition and enter the Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov, in particular, to the pediatric faculty. And yet, if the applicant does not rely entirely on his strength in preparing for the EGE (Unified State Exam) or competitive exams and he needs a qualified mentor, then for this you can, for example, go to preparatory courses of Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov  where there are various groups for the duration of study and for the number of students in groups who prepare for the entrance examinations to our university.

There is one more question, not quite ordinary, but applicants are interested in it, because life is always full of surprises:

Is it possible to transfer from our faculty to another while studying?

Yes, it is possible, if a student falls ill with a certain disease (for example, tuberculosis) while studying, then getting a pediatric education becomes impossible. And then, as a special exception, for the continuation of studies, a transfer to another faculty is possible (medical, medical-biological). There are also reverse situations when students are transferred to the pediatric faculty. As a rule, this happens in connection with the prevailing circumstances in the family (for example, a child has appeared, and there is a desire to competently approach the preservation and strengthening of his health, etc.).

Thus, Russian National Research Medical University named after N. I. Pirogov  created the conditions for preparing for the entrance exams, and the departments of the pediatric faculty has everything necessary for theoretical and clinical training, the acquisition of practical work skills, and their consolidation during the period of practical training. It should only learn the knowledge that teachers are always ready to share.
