The Faculty of Medicine and Biology (ICF) was founded in 1963 in accordance with the needs of rapidly developing medical and biological science and new challenges to human health, which appeared with the expansion of its habitat (space flights, deep-sea expeditions, etc.), the emergence of new viral, bacterial diseases, new chemical compounds and materials that led to a new approach to the issues of biosafety, diagnosis and treatment of humans.

The founders of the ICF were such outstanding medical scientists of our country as academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professors Yu. M. Lopukhin, Yu. A. Vladimirov, Yu. F. Panchenko, P. V. Sergeev, R.V. Petrov, A.I. Archakov, S.B. Seredenin, E.M. Kogan. Their work was continued by their students and followers, V.P. Chekhoninin Corresponding Member RAS V.I. Skvortsova, professors V.A. Petrov, Yu.V. Balyakinym, A.N., Osipov, L.V. Gankovskaya, A.G. Kamkin, S.A. Moshkovsky, T.A. Zarubina, O.O. Favorova, S.I. Kutsevym, V.N. Akimov, A.A. Lagunin., P.V. Sutyagin, L.V. Gubskim, V.A. Gorsky, S.P. Grigoriev, P.D. Vaganov, Yu.A. Yudin, cosmonaut O. Yu. Atkov and others. As a result, new fundamental disciplines were added to classical clinical clinical disciplines that are taught in medical universities: experimental and theoretical physics (electrodynamics, optics, atomic physics, medical electronics), experimental and theoretical chemistry (inorganic and organic). chemistry, colloid and physical chemistry), higher mathematics, probability theory, and a number of disciplines in medical and biological disciplines began to be taught in a new way with the involvement of modern achievements of Physico-Chemical Biology, Mathematics and Medicine: Molecular Biology and medical biotechnology, molecular physiology, molecular genetics, Molecular Pharmacology and Radiobiology, pharmacogenomics. Over time, fundamentally new, unparalleled departments appeared, such as the departments of immunology, medical nan biotechnologies, bioinformatics, instrumental diagnostics, medical cybernetics and computer science, organizations of biomedical research, and others.

As a result of cooperation between theoretical and clinical departments, some clinical disciplines have also received a powerful impetus to development. On the initiative of the Department of Fundamental Neurology and Neurosurgery (Head of Corresponding Member of the RAS Skvortsova), the Federal Center for Stroke was established, which introduced a new system for providing gradual care for patients with acute cerebral circulation disorders. Since 2005, on the basis of the Federal Center, for the first time in Russia, the Research and Development Institute of Stroke was established and is actively functioning, the new building of which will soon be commissioned. The achievements of theoretical departments are successfully introduced by other clinical departments (Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dermatovenereology, Clinical Pharmacology, Therapy, etc.), contributing to the development of personalized medicine.

After completing their studies at the ICF, graduates have the broadest choice of applying their unique education – be it research and clinical institutes, medical universities, innovative domestic and foreign pharmaceutical companies, where they can be graduate students, interns, research assistants or teachers; clinical and diagnostic centers and medical institutions where they work as laboratory and functional diagnostics doctors, ultrasound diagnostics doctors, magnetic resonance tomography and multispiral computed tomography doctors, radiologists, geneticists doctors, forensic doctors, introducing in clinical practice the latest high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment. Subsequently, our best graduates become directors of research institutes, deans of faculties, heads of departments and laboratories both in our country and abroad. Great opportunities were demonstrated by some graduates of the ICF in a competitive free economy, by organizing a number of high-tech firms and medical and diagnostic associations. Some of our business graduates successfully help their home faculty. They formed the Green Light Scientific Charitable Foundation to support young scientists involved in promising areas of modern fundamental medicine and biology.

Time has confirmed the correctness and expediency of creating an ICF. The faculty is actively changing in accordance with changing conditions and scientific discoveries, which gives hope for its future success in the field of medical and biological education and science for the benefit of human health.
